Day 13 - 14 Stone

Stone is one of those near perfect stops for boaters, having an attractive town centre near the canal, plenty of facilities, a laundrette (The Washtub on Pirehill Lane), shops, boatyards and very importantly loads of visitor moorings with rings.  There are four locks in Stone itself followed shortly by four locks at Meaford.

'Welcome to Stone' ceramic bench by the canal - each 'tile' designed by a local child

A reminder of the working boats which once made the town a thriving centre of the canal trade

The handsome library

St Michael and St Wulfad's Church

Restored canalside buildings, now a restaurant and a pub

The ancient Star Inn, famous for having no room on the same level

Excellent and helpful hardware shop on Lichfield Street

Window display, Dunoon factory shop (fine porcelain made in Stone)

The opening ceremony for the canal in 1771 went awry when cannon shells damaged a nearby lock and bridges - however, the canal was definitely A Good Thing for the town

A bar and working boats at Crown Wharf, part of Joule's brewery

Boatyard of Canal Cruising Co with  covered dry dock (the latter dating from the 1770s)

Joule's Brewery building.  Joule's beer is still brewed in Market Drayton

Unusual narrowboat with centre wheelhouse 'Cutter'

Day 35 - 36 Marple to Bugsworth Basin

Onwards for the first time along the Peak Forest Canal and it's quite different to any other we've travelled.  It's shallower ...
